A south-easter coming off the bay will find a short flue and push smoke straight back into the lounge. The fix is not a better fire-lighting technique, it is flue height and an anti-downdraught cowl specified for an exposed site, planned before the unit is ordered.
The salt air matters just as much. Parklands and Sunningdale sit far enough back to be moderate, but Big Bay and the beachfront properties eat standard galvanised flue components. We fit marine-grade 316 stainless on anything near the water.
Most of the housing stock here is newer, which means no existing chimney. That is rarely a problem: a twin-wall insulated flue routes cleanly through a modern roof, and freestanding closed-combustion units are the most common installation we do in this area. Covered patios are the other big one, where a built-in braai with a properly sized flue turns an unusable windy space into the part of the house everyone sits in.
Wind first. Anti-downdraught cowls and correct flue height on every installation, because this is the most exposed area we work in.
