Camps Bay and Clifton homes tend to be glass-heavy with big open-plan volumes and sea views nobody wants interrupted, which points toward double-sided see-through units, wide landscape fireboxes and frameless installations that read as part of the architecture rather than an appliance bolted to a wall.
Those same open volumes need more output than people expect. A 40 square metre lounge is served by an 8kW unit; a double-volume open-plan space with a wall of glass needs 10 to 14kW to feel warm at all. Oversizing is a mistake, but undersizing is the more common one here, and it produces a fireplace that looks beautiful and heats nothing.
Hout Bay and Llandudno are a different job again. More mountain than beachfront, colder and damper in winter, older homes with real chimneys, and a genuine need for heat rather than a feature. Those are usually closed-combustion conversions into existing hearths, with the chimney lined first.
Everywhere on this coastline, marine-grade 316 stainless is the only sensible specification for external flue components.

Yes, and they suit this area well. A see-through unit between a lounge and dining area, or between an interior room and a covered terrace, works architecturally and heats both sides. It needs planning for the flue route and the wall structure before the build, not after.
Regularly. Those chimneys are often unlined and will not draw reliably for a modern closed-combustion unit. We line the chimney in stainless, sized to the new insert, and keep the original fireplace opening and surround intact.
Hard on the flue system rather than the fireplace. Standard galvanised components corrode within a few seasons anywhere along this coast, so marine-grade 316 stainless is the standard specification for every external part we fit here.
Yes. Wind exposure and the flue route are the two constraints, and both are solvable. Where a wood braai flue is not practical, a fixed gas braai with a Certificate of Compliance is usually the cleaner answer.
