Description
Looking for a small stove that can burn coal as happily as wood? The Sentinel 942 S is a compact cast iron stove with a multi-fuel grate, primary and secondary air controls and a choice of top or rear flue. At 5kW and 78% efficiency, it warms a small room quickly and keeps fuel use down.
Sentinel 942 S Stove Features
Real multi-fuel ability
Many buyers ask for an anthracite fireplace because coal burns long and hot. The 942 S has a grate that you shake with a lever, which drops ash clear of the fire so coal keeps breathing from below. Switch to wood and you simply adjust the air.
Cast iron that holds warmth
The body is cast iron, which absorbs heat and releases it slowly. Your room stays warm for longer after the fire settles, and the heat feels gentler than from a thin steel box.
Simple controls
- Separate primary and secondary air controls
- Stainless steel door handle and levers that stay cooler to the touch
- Removable ash pan for quick cleaning
- Firebox takes logs of about 25 centimetres
Fits where space is tight
It measures 32 x 43 x 56 cm, so it suits a small hearth or an old fireplace opening. The 125 mm flue can exit from the top or the back, which helps where the ceiling is low or you want to use an existing chimney.
Is the 942 S right for your home?
Sentinel rates this 5kW fireplace for about 42 m². That is a small lounge, a TV room or a main bedroom with a standard ceiling. For a larger open-plan room you will want more output, so browse the bigger models in our freestanding fireplaces range or read our guide on choosing a heating fireplace.

Sentinel 942 S FAQs
Can the Sentinel 942 S burn anthracite?
Yes. It is a multi-fuel stove, and the shaker grate lets ash fall away so coal burns cleanly. Use smokeless coal or anthracite, not ordinary household coal, for the best results.
Is a cast iron stove better than a steel one?
Cast iron warms up a little slower but holds heat longer, so the room cools down gradually. Steel heats up faster. For steady evening warmth in a small room, cast iron is a great fit.
Does it carry a warranty?
Yes, Sentinel fireplaces carry a three year limited warranty from the maker.
