Description
The Sentinel 942 M is a no-nonsense cast iron fireplace for homeowners who want reliable heat every winter without a complicated stove. It is the medium model in the 942 range, with 8kW output, a 78% efficiency rating and a solid build that takes years of daily fires.
Sentinel 942 M Multi Fuel Fireplace Features
Built from cast iron
Cast iron spreads heat evenly and keeps radiating after the fire dies down, so your lounge stays warm for longer on the same load of wood. The unit measures 42 x 48 x 65.5 cm, a footprint that fits most standard hearths.
Multi fuel grate with a shaker lever
A lever moves the grate to shake ash through into the pan, which keeps air flowing under the fire. That makes the 942 M happy on wood or on approved smokeless fuels.
Simple controls
Primary and secondary air controls let you build a hot fire quickly, then turn it down for a slow, steady burn. The handle and control levers are stainless steel, and the firebox takes logs of around 35 centimetres.
Top or rear flue
The 125 mm flue can leave from the top or the rear, which gives us options when placing it in front of a chimney breast or against an outside wall.
Is the 942 M right for your home?
Sentinel rates it at a heating area of 77 m2, a good match for a medium lounge or family room with a standard ceiling. For a larger open-plan space, the 942 L gives more output. See both side by side in our freestanding fireplaces section.

Sentinel 942 M FAQs
Is the 942 M good value as a first fireplace?
Yes. It gives solid cast iron heat, multi fuel flexibility and simple controls at an entry-level spend, which is why many first-time buyers start with the 942 range.
What fuel can I use in an 8kW freestanding fireplace like the 942 M?
Dry hardwood is the easiest fuel. Thanks to the multi fuel grate you can also use approved smokeless fuel. Avoid wet wood and treated timber, which tar up the flue and dirty the glass.
