Description
Winter evenings in Cape Town call for real heat, and the Home Fires R0802 delivers it without fuss. This solid freestanding wood fireplace puts out 8 to 10kW, weighs 135 kg and pairs a steel body with cast iron, so it warms up well and keeps giving heat as the fire settles. It suits families who want one dependable heater for the main living space.
Home Fires R0802 Freestanding Fireplace Features
Two fuels, one fireplace
The R0802 burns wood or anthracite. Wood gives you the classic flame picture and that crackle in the evening. Anthracite burns hotter and longer, which helps on the coldest nights or when good dry wood is hard to find. Having both options makes it a practical anthracite fireplace as well as a wood heater.
Steel and cast iron build
The mix of steel and cast iron gives the unit real mass. That weight soaks up heat while the fire burns and then releases it slowly, so the room stays comfortable for longer and you top up less often.
A size that fits most hearths
At 43 x 50 x 85.3 cm it stands at a comfortable height for loading, and the 125 mm flue is a common size, which keeps the flue run simple. It sits neatly on a hearth plate in a corner or against a feature wall.
Is the R0802 right for your home?
As a rough guide, an 8 to 10kW unit heats a larger lounge or open-plan space of about 70 to 120 m2. Ceiling height, glass doors and insulation all change that figure, so send us your room size and a photo and we will confirm the fit. You can compare it with other freestanding fireplaces or browse every fireplace we stock.

Home Fires R0802 FAQs
Can I burn anthracite in the R0802?
Yes. The R0802 is made for wood and anthracite. Many owners light with wood and then add anthracite for a long, hot burn late at night. We will show you how to set the air controls for each fuel at handover.
Does a freestanding fireplace need a chimney?
No brick chimney is needed. We run a 125 mm flue up through the ceiling and roof, finished with a cowl and flashing. Where you already have a sound chimney, we can often connect to it instead.
How heavy is the R0802?
It weighs 135 kg. Most floors carry that easily on a proper hearth, but we check the floor and hearth on site before we install, and our team handles all the lifting.
