It is a tall, freestanding wood stove from the Polish maker’s premium range, with a big glass door framed in a blackened edge and a handle that closes softly. Behind the good looks sits a 12kW heater that can keep a large Cape Town home warm on a wet July night.

A big window on the fire
The Sven gives you a wide, clear view of the flames. An air-wash system sends a curtain of air down the inside of the glass, so soot has a harder time building up and you spend less time cleaning.
Clean, controlled burning
Kratki uses primary, secondary and tertiary air in its steel stoves. In simple terms, more of the gas and smoke from the wood gets burned inside the firebox instead of going up the flue. The maker quotes about 76 percent efficiency, which means more heat from every log you buy.
Heat that lingers
The firebox is lined with thick ceramic panels that soak up heat and keep releasing it after the flames settle. Combined with the heavy 140 kg steel body, you get radiant heat in front of the stove and convection that moves warm air around the room.
Tall, slim footprint
The Sven measures 52 x 52.2 x 126.1 cm, so it takes little floor space for the heat it gives. The 150 mm flue can leave from the top or the rear, which helps when you need to work around beams or a wall.

What is the heat output of the Sven?
The Sven gives a nominal 12kW. That is a strong output for a single stove, which is why it is aimed at larger rooms and open-plan spaces rather than a small study or bedroom.
Does the glass stay clean on a Kratki fireplace?
The air-wash system keeps most soot off the glass when you burn dry, seasoned wood with the air control open enough. Damp wood or a fire that is choked down for hours will still mark the glass, so a quick wipe now and then helps.
