Description
Picture a kettle warming on top of the fire while the room heats up around you. The Hydrofire Selene gives you that, plus 12kW of steady heat from a fully cast iron body. The door, body, top and the inner plates that face the fire are all cast iron, which is why it holds heat so well and should stand up to many winters.
Hydrofire Selene Fireplace Features
Cast iron inside and out
Many stoves line the firebox with fire bricks, which crack and need replacing over time. The Selene uses heavy cast iron plates on the inside as well, together with a cast iron baffle. That makes it a true cast iron fireplace from the outside in.
A flat top for the kettle
The large, flat top is handy during load shedding or on a cold Sunday. Boil water for tea or keep a pot of soup warm while the fire does its main job.
Cleaner burning with three air streams
Air reaches the wood in three ways. A low vent supplies the base of the fire, an upper vent burns off the smoke and sweeps the inside of the glass, and small holes along the back wall supply a final stream that completes the burn. Hydrofire states it meets the Euro 2022 Eco Design rules, and it runs at 75% efficiency. A riddling grate lets you shake the ash through without opening the door.
Smooth door and flexible flue
The door handle runs on a ball bearing, so it opens and closes smoothly, and the door seals with heat-resistant rope. The 150 mm flue can leave from the top or the rear, which helps when the fireplace has to sit close to a wall or connect to an existing chimney.
Is the Selene fireplace right for your home?
Hydrofire rates the Selene at about 125 m2. That suits a large lounge, an open-plan living area or a double-volume room with good insulation. It is too much fire for a small lounge. Compare it with our other freestanding fireplaces if you need less heat.
Installation in Cape Town
Our team supplies and installs the Selene with the right flue, cowl and roof flashing for Cape Town weather, and we handle compliance. Read more about our fireplace installation in Cape Town or see the full Hydrofire fireplace range.
Hydrofire Selene FAQs
Can I cook on the Hydrofire Selene?
Yes, within reason. The flat cast iron top gets hot enough to boil a kettle and keep a pot warm. It is not a full cooker, but it is very useful on a cold evening or when the power is off.
How big an area does a 12kW fireplace heat?
Hydrofire rates the Selene at about 125 m2. Ceiling height, glass and draughts change that figure, so we always check the room with you before you buy.
