Description
The Charnwood Island III is built for homeowners who want a proper, traditional looking stove that can carry a big space through the coldest months. It is the largest model in the classic Charnwood range from the UK, and its wide double doors open onto a generous firebox that makes loading long logs easy. If you are comparing wood burning fireplaces for sale for a large lounge or an open plan home, this is one of the strongest options we stock.
Charnwood Island III Fireplace Features
Double doors that seal properly
Many a double door fireplace struggles to close tightly. Charnwood uses its own patented door close mechanism, so both doors pull shut in one easy movement and form an air-tight seal. That gives you real control over the burn rate and stops the fire racing through your wood.
Strong, steady output
The Island III runs from 8kW up to 16kW, so you can keep a gentle fire going on a mild evening or open it up when a cold front comes through. At 76.40% efficiency it turns more of each log into room heat instead of sending it up the flue.
Built to last
The body is steel, with cast iron doors and a cast iron top for long, even heat release. It weighs 180 kg and measures 45 x 73 x 71 cm, and it takes a 180 mm flue from either the top or the rear. Black is standard, with other colours on special order.
Clean glass and easy cleaning
An airwash system keeps the glass clear so you see the flames, not soot. The ash pan slides out for simple cleaning, which matters when you light the fire most nights in winter.
Is the Charnwood Island III right for your home?
Our specs rate it for a heating area of about 160 m², which makes it a good freestanding wood fireplace for big living areas, double volume rooms and open plan spaces that join the lounge, dining room and kitchen. For a small lounge it is too much heat. Browse our freestanding fireplaces if you need something smaller.
Installation in Cape Town

Charnwood Island III FAQs
How large an area does the Charnwood Island III heat?
It is rated for about 160 m², with an output range of 8kW to 16kW. Ceiling height, windows and insulation all play a part, so send us your floor plan and we will check that it is the right size before you order.
Can I order the Island III in a colour?
Yes. Black is the standard finish, and Charnwood offers colours such as almond, gunmetal, bronze, pewter, blue and green on special order. Special order colours take longer to arrive, so ask our team early in the season.
Is a Charnwood fireplace hard to clean?
No. The ash pan slides out and the airwash keeps the glass clear for longer. Most owners only need a quick wipe of the glass and an ash clear-out every few fires.
