Quick answer: a closed-combustion fireplace installation in Cape Town costs R3,500–R4,800 in labour for a straightforward single-storey job, plus R6,000–R22,000 for the flue system depending on height and spec. Most installations are done in a single day.
What “Closed Combustion” Actually Means
A closed-combustion (also called slow-combustion) fireplace is a sealed steel or cast-iron firebox with a glass door and controlled air intakes. Because you control the air, you control the burn — the fire burns slower, hotter and far cleaner than an open hearth. The practical result: about a third of the firewood for three times the heat in the room, and no sparks on the carpet.
The Installation, Step by Step
- Site assessment. We confirm the unit suits the room size, check floor and wall clearances, and plan the flue route — straight up through the roof is ideal; external wall routing also works.
- Floor protection. On wooden floors or carpet, a steel floor plate goes down first.
- Flue installation. The flue is the heart of the job. Single-wall flue works in open rooms; insulated twin-wall sections are used wherever the pipe passes a ceiling, roof or wall. Correct flue height (generally at least 4.6m from the firebox, ending above the roofline) is what makes a fireplace draw properly.
- Sealing and finishing. Roof penetration gets flashed and weatherproofed; ceiling plates finish the look inside.
- Test fire and handover. We light it, check the draw, and show you how to run it — including the overnight burn setting.

Safety and Compliance
Closed-combustion units must be installed to SANS clearance requirements — minimum distances from combustible walls, protected floors, and insulated flue sections through ceilings. Done right, these units are the safest real-flame option for a family home. Done wrong, they’re a house-fire risk and an insurance problem. This is genuinely not a DIY job.
Choosing the Right Unit
Match the kW rating to the room: 5kW for smaller rooms, 7–9kW for standard open-plan living areas, 10kW+ for double-volume spaces. Browse our freestanding closed-combustion range (from R7,490) or ask us to shortlist units for your room size — we install every brand we sell.
