Wood vs gas
Wood fire pits give you the crackle, the coals and the smell of a real fire — and if you buy something like the SAFire Plateau, you can braai on it too. Gas fire pits light instantly, burn clean and switch off the moment guests leave; you pay more upfront and you’ll need a gas bottle nearby.
Steel, ceramic or concrete
- Steel is affordable and heats up fast. Thin steel eventually warps and rusts — thicker-walled units like the Northern Flame Hakan last far longer.
- Ceramic holds heat beautifully and looks good cold, but it doesn’t like being moved around or rained on constantly.
- Concrete designer pits (like the SAFire Rondo and Sirca Concrete) are heavy, permanent-feeling pieces that anchor an outdoor area.
Size and placement
- Allow at least 2–3 metres of clear space around the pit — away from thatch, overhanging branches and boundary walls.
