What “Closed Combustion” Actually Means
A closed-combustion (also called slow-combustion) fireplace is a sealed steel or cast-iron firebox with a glass door and controlled air intakes. Because you control the air, you control the burn — the fire burns slower, hotter and far cleaner than an open hearth. The practical result: about a third of the firewood for three times the heat in the room, and no sparks on the carpet.
The Installation, Step by Step
- Site assessment. We confirm the unit suits the room size, check floor and wall clearances, and plan the flue route — straight up through the roof is ideal; external wall routing also works.
- Floor protection. On wooden floors or carpet, a steel floor plate goes down first.
- Flue installation. The flue is the heart of the job. Single-wall flue works in open rooms; insulated twin-wall sections are used wherever the pipe passes a ceiling, roof or wall. Correct flue height (generally at least 4.6m from the firebox, ending above the roofline) is what makes a fireplace draw properly.
- Sealing and finishing. Roof penetration gets flashed and weatherproofed; ceiling plates finish the look inside.
